Abstract

This study explores the role of China’s digital trade provisions in shaping the emerging global economic corridors under the Digital Silk Road (DSR) initiative. As a critical component of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, the DSR aims to establish a robust digital infrastructure network that promotes cross-border data flows, e-commerce facilitation, and regulatory cooperation among participating countries. The research employs a qualitative analysis of China’s recent Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to examine how their digital trade rules contribute to building a digitally integrated economic corridor. Key findings reveal that China’s provisions balance the promotion of open data flows with national sovereignty concerns, export a distinct model of digital governance, and enhance trade efficiency through improved digital infrastructure. However, challenges related to regulatory fragmentation, privacy concerns, and geopolitical competition persist. The study concludes that China’s digital trade framework under the DSR is reshaping global economic connectivity by creating new digital trade norms and fostering regional development. It recommends multilateral cooperation, transparent governance, and inclusive capacity building to maximize the benefits of this transformative initiative.
